With 791 furnished one, two and three bedroom apartments, Florida State University gets a good rating from us. That's not to say that with 30,519 total student population, we deem this a satisfactory percentage of family housing. Let's just say that Florida State University is better than average, but much in need of improvement. The family housing is one and a half mile from campus but the university provides reliable free shuttle bus service. The up side is there is a playground on the housing grounds; the down side is that AC is not provided, so count on this extra expense in Sunshineville, USA.
The day care center, the Alumni Village Child Development Center takes kids age 2.6 to 5.11 or kindergarden. Call early to get on the waiting list and to find out about subsidies (850 644-830). The University is enrolled in the Federal Subsidized Day Care Program so Pell recipients receive discounts and in some cases, free day care.
Don't be too put off by the party school reputation or all the football FSU Seminoles rah-rah-har-ness, liberal arts, especially political science, music, drama, dance and art. Physics, chemistry and biology departments have state of the art equipment and facilities. The computer science program is strong here along with impressive business and engineering schools. The School of Motion Picture, TV, and Recording Arts apparently is a newer and yet award winning department. If you get too bored you can sign up for the Honors Program, which offers smaller advanced classes. For more challenge try the Directed Individual Study courses in which you can participate in independent research projects. If you want to escape entirely you can participate in the foreign study centers in Florence or London, or escape the hot summer by signing up for the summer programs in France, Switzerland, Russia, Spain, the Czech Republic or Costa Rica.
Most (80%) of the students are from Florida and with the great low instate tuition cost: $1, 988, it makes perfect sense. Male/ female ratio is 45% to 55%. Twenty percent are members of faternities and sororities and only 18% live on-campus. The school is multicultural with 21% minorities. There is a Non-traditional Student Services office and a Multicultural Peer Facilitator Program.
